It feels a bit like something has been planted in my mind that is leading me through rooms there of which I’d hitherto been unaware. And Mr Haruf’s book is doing precisely that. I go along with that, but with what I’ve learned over the years I would add the phrase, “to provoke thought”. I was once told (by a teacher when I was in my early teens) that one writes to inform or to entertain. It’s a good story, but it was only after I’d finished it and started reflecting upon what I’d read that I began to realise just what an impact it had had one me.
